Subtitled The True Account of the 1938 War of the Worlds Radio Broadcast, this picture book depiction clearly conveys both what happened during the radio play and the fearful reactions of many listeners. With the use of bold colors to emphasize what is happening in listeners' imaginations and two-tone illustrations to represent ordinary life, a clear picture is drawn of that Halloween prank. Much more information can be gathered in the notes at the end of the book.
I think this is a book that belongs on the Mock Sibert reading list.

Well-written with illustrations that add to our understanding of the situation. The information at the book of the book is interesting and helpful. I especially like the blurb on H.G. Wells. I also think this is a useful informational book about the importance of evaluating your information source and about the power of the media. At least on TV, they could have a disclaimer scrolling at the bottom. I can't even imagine how I would have reacted if I had heard the news broadcast without hearing any of the announcements about it being a play.

I appreciate the way McCarthy balances kid-appealing illustrations with informative text in Aliens are Coming. My husband shared this book with his fourth grade class, many of whom were not familiar with the 1938 broadcast, and they really enjoyed it. The additional information in the back of the book led to a lively classroom discussion about the "copycat" broadcasts that happened in other places around the world, and the possibility of the nation falling for such a prank again. If you get a chance, check out McCarthy’s website at www.aliensarecoming.com – it has a transcript of the original broadcast as well educator resources and activities for kids.
