Emi and the Rhino Scientist is a book about many, many different topics. It's about rhinos in the wild and rhinos in captivity. It's about animal breeding programs and conservation. It's also about careers in animal science and the scientific method. All of this information is neatly packaged within the story of Emi the rhino and her journey to motherhood.
From the opening pages, the author captures our attention with sonogram images of Emi's unborn baby, and keeps it with the intriguing steps that are taken to help Emi give birth. I found myself rooting for Emi and Terri (the "rhino scientist" who works with her) and even getting a little misty-eyed when Andala is finally born (and those baby rhino photos are adorable!).
Along the way, I learned about the five different species of rhinos, the successes and struggles of keeping and breeding animals in captivity, and the many roles humans play in helping to keep rhinos from extinction.
This book is really a complete package - packed full of info, yet with a story that is easy to follow. Back matter includes a "Rhino Field Guide" for distinguishing between the five species of rhinos, a glossary, index, further reading list, and a short "What's Everyone Up To Now?" section with websites for checking up on the rhino's progress.
